Our company was established in October 19, 1973. Since then, we accomplish a lot of performance as a salt electrolysis plant maker in both domestic and foreign markets. Our company was established when a notice to switch from mercury electrolysis to other method was issued by the former MITI (Ministry of International Trade and Industry) in 1973 due to Minamata mercury pollution. Since then, we have developed various technologies such as for the diaphragm, improved ion exchange membrane, mono-polar and bi-polar filter press type ion exchange membrane processes. Bi-polar ion exchange was developed with Tosoh. Currently, all domestic electrolysis plants have been replaced with the ion exchange membrane and it is widely recognized in the world.
In addition, we acquired all electrolyzer maintenance technology and operating technology from Asahi Glass Company in 2001. Our domestic and foreign production in ion exchange membrane electrolysis plants reached 12 million tons and we kept a 40% share in both the domestic and foreign markets, and established a strong position as a soda electrolysis maker.
The domestic caustic soda production is about 4.4 million tons a year. Since caustic soda and chlorine are important chemicals, production facilities are continuously updated to maintain the highest standards. Therefore, the demands of these materials are steady. In Europe, the conversion from the mercury process and diaphragm to ion exchange membrane is promoted. In China, construction of new ion exchange membrane plant is very active due to growing domestic demands. We pride in our expertise and know-how based on our rich achievements and endeavor to increase our share in the market.
In addition, we stress device development, design and ecological technology to fulfill social needs, with our extensive electrolysis technology, development of electrolysis process and improvements. In the area of water treatment, we develop on-site hyprochlorous acid, ozone, and hydrogen generators as well as seawater electrolysis devices. For paper makers, we develop large ozone units for bleach pulp that has gained high appraisal. Since these technologies reduce the load of environment, it has gained much attention. Being broad in application is wide we will continue to study and challenge developments for better economical performance.
